You first notice the low rumble off in the distance, and even though it could be clear skies and sunny, you give an unsure look up. The rumble steadily grows to an audible roar like a caged lion, and you quickly realize there is a storm brewing, but not of wind and rain. This one is a whirlwind of gears and gauges. Welcome to downtown, and Friday Night Thunder.
Started in August 2010, Friday Night Thunder -- on the third Friday each month -- has grown to about 100 cars and trucks, from Camaros and Corvairs, to Mustangs and Mopars. The free cruise-in is a chance for car enthusiasts to meet, talk shop and admire the craftsmanship. There is music and raffles throughout the evening, courtesy of the Citrus County Mopars club.
The cruise-in is held in the Inverness Government Center plaza. Many of the participants bring lawn chairs to sit and socialize, while others grab dinner at one of the numerous surrounding restaurants. The atmosphere of high energy and horsepower is still very much family friendly.
