Who would have thought one of the smallest inhabitants of Inverness... the Florida Cooter Turtle, would be the center of national media discussion, as well as play host to a 3 day festival with fun and activities for the entire family?

The last full weekend of October brings Sunny Cooter out of his turtle shell for three days of non-stop fun. Leading up to this are the Miss Cooter Fest and Cooter Idol competitions. These contests pit the best spokesmodels and singers, respectively, against each other. Cash and prizes go to the winners; while fun and entertainment is provided for all.  Also in early October, join in the Cooter Scooter Poker Run.

The Great American Cooter Festival has enjoyed national attention that began with this memorable Daily Show segment on publicity surrounding the first festival in 2004. It continues to grow with community support.

Friday night marks the kick off of the Great American Cooter Festival weekend with the "Friday night Kick-off Block Party".  And, as it's name implies, it was kickin'!  Take a look.
